Hammocks Beach State Park — Bear Island Restroom Facility Repair — Onslow County, North Carolina
S&EC was brought in by the site civil engineer to determine the location and suitability of soil/site conditions for a new subsurface septic system for the restroom/bathhouse facility on Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park. Bear Island is a remote barrier island between Bear Inlet and Bogue Inlet in Onslow Bay. The old restroom/bathhouse facility septic system was malfunctioning, and a new septic system was needed. S&EC conducted a preliminary soils/site evaluation and prepared a soils map and report for the engineer’s use. S&EC met on-site with the local health department to evaluate the soil/site conditions in the targeted drain field area and figure out the details of the drain field. Due to the sandy soil and site conditions present on this island, this septic system utilized low pressure pipe (LPP) drain lines to assist with equal distribution across the drain field, wooden bulk heads were placed around the drain field, and the septic tank was anchored underground. The septic system was designed by a wastewater engineer and was permitted through Onslow County Health Department. The new septic system was installed in late fall/winter 2024. The Hammock Beach State Park facilities and Bear Island restroom/bathhouse are open seasonally. Check the NC State Park website for facility status and ferry service schedules to Bear Island.
